No Curling Dec 21st

December 15th, 2007 by WCC Admin

From Dave H.

I am going to cancel the curling league games we had on DEC 21st and
reschedule that game for sometime in the new year. There seems to be
alot of people sick and injured or just MIA so it is impacting the
league play. Hopefully everyone can get better and come back strong
in the new year. When I get the date for the rescheduel I will let
everyone know and will also post it in the Fall League section of our
website.

Putting the curl in Curling

October 27th, 2007 by WCC Admin

From C.A. Casey’s personal blog (Carol is the lead of Team Halpenny)

Well, I played my second game of curling last night and my team won. Yeah. We actually didn’t do bad once I got the hang of throwing the first two stones lighter than heavier. Skill in knowing how much muscle to put behind the stone and releasing it so it curls properly is only half the equation. The other half is the ever changing condition of the ice.

The ice can be fast or slow and it can have rough or slick patches that will alter the course of the stone. The condition of the ice changes as stone after stone rolls over it and as slick paths are created by the sweepers and the players who glide on the Teflon soles. Also last night, the door to the ice was left open for a while. That warmed the rink down and, while it was more comfortable temperature wise, the ice got slicker and slicker and nearly every stone was too heavy–rolling all the way through the house. After someone closed the door, the ice hardened, changing the playing conditions again.

Eight Teams this season

October 9th, 2007 by WCC Admin

Our fall season is fast approaching and we are going to be close to doubling our membership, the current team structure is posted on our website under the FALL SEASON link so take a look to see who you will be curling with. If you are interested in curling and your name is not on a team please let me know. We would like to see all curlers show up around 7:30 pm on the 12th of October so you can meet your new teammates and begin to organize before the first game. As always through the season we are looking for volunteers to assist us with getting the ice ready and getting the stones on the ice, this gives you a good understanding of what goes into making good ice and what tools of the trade are utilized.

When you arrive at the rink please pay at the box office upon entering and the fees are $200 plus $50 club/usca dues. This covers an 11 week season and saves $75 off if you were to pay for individual nights. For any spares that are interested please forward me your names and I will let the Skips know who is available. The individual night curling fee is $25.

After the games we meet in the party room where there will be refreshments for sale and snacks available, this is one of the great parts of the sport where you can sit and make new friends and the winners have to buy the losers drinks.

This is going to be an exciting fall season with some great curling and new friendships.

Register Today

October 2nd, 2007 by WCC Admin

Curlers,

I just wanted to send out a short note to see who will be joining our
fall League. I will be formulating the teams over the next week or so
in preparation for our Oct 12th opener. On the 12th we will meet at
the club at 7:30 pm to organize. The teams will be up on our website
so look there for any updates.

I have heard from a number of curlers who will be coming back so we
will have alot of experienced curlers along with a good amout of new
curlers. The teams this year will be split into teams of experienced
and non-experienced curlers to help teach and promote this wonderful
game of curling.

The league fees are as follows:

$200 for an 11 week season plus $50 for club and usca dues. If you
have already paid for the 2007 club and USCA dues then you do not have
to pay them again until later this year for 2008.

All monies are to be paid to the rink but please let us know who pays
the rink the $50 as we need to track this and get the money back.

This is going to be a great season and we are going to be larger than
ever with 6 teams so get you names in soon.

Cheers,

Dave Holt

Curious about curling? You’ve seen it during the Winter Olympics.
