NEWS: No Joke, Curlers Eying South Lake Tahoe club
By | February 6, 2010
by Brian Duggan, Lake Tahoe Tribune
…whether the sport popularized in 16th century Scotland will come to South Lake Tahoe will depend on local support and a willingness to invest enough money to start a club. The largest investment would be the stones, which come in sets of 16 and cost about $500 each. For three sets, curling instructor Eric Hazard said the investment could reach about $18,000 plus other equipment such as brooms.
Then there’s the issue of finding a place to play on a regular basis.
“Part of the problem is curling isn’t as cheap as you’d think it would be,” said Rob Swain, the recreation supervisor of the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena. Swain said because of the high costs to start a club in South Lake Tahoe, the arena could invest in imitation curling equipment to generate interest in the sport, which could lead to more funding in the future.
“We just can’t afford right now to pony up for it,” he said.
Jerome Larson, who some refer to as the “Johnny Appleseed of curling”, helped organize the curling clinic in South Lake Tahoe last week. He said it takes a core group of interested people, about six to 10, to start a club and “carry the burden for awhile.”

News: Hot Time on the Ice
By | February 6, 2010
by Danny Bernardini, The author covers county government for The Reporter.
…Expecting to find maybe 10 like-minded folks who harbor an unnatural fascination for the sport, I was shocked to see 50 people turn out to get the skinny on curling during the three-hour event.
Most folks know it as the sport where people slide around, push rocks, sweep a lot and holler at each other. A better way to describe it is shuffleboard on ice, with a lot more screaming. And brooms.
Upon arriving, we were given a quick rundown of the basics, told a brief history of the sport and, oh yeah, had to sign a waiver in case we were mangled or seriously bludgeoned on the ice.
I don’t know about you, but I find that anytime a waiver is involved, there’s a good chance whatever I am about to do will be fantastic.

Good Morning Sacramento
By | December 31, 2009
UPDATE: Video Link HERE
Shayne Wells of Good Day Sacramento gave curling a shot.
CBS/CW Channel 31 and Good Morning Sacramento wants us to teach them to curl. With very short notice the filming will be done this Sunday Morning at 8:00 AM. We know very little on what the format will be but we believe that it will be shot live on short segments between longer news segments with possibly two reporters being taught. This is a great opportunity for some very good TV coverage for our club. So we suggest all show up at 7:00 AM to help set up and maybe get a chance to throw a few stones as well.
Please let Alice or Jerome know if you can be here. That is this coming Sunday, Jan 3rd at 7am.

Saturday, January 30, 2010
6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Vacaville Ice Sports
Wine Country Curling Club is pleased to provide an opportunity for new and and potential curlers to learn how the game is played. The club welcome youth, adult, senior, wheelchair curlers and anyone who could slide 42 pound granite stones down the ice.
Parents or legal guardians must sign waivers for children under 18 years of age. Be sure to wear warm, comfortable clothing – track pants or sweatpants work best and athletic rubber soled shoes such as tennis shoes.
Once you completed our Learn-to-Curl session (we guarantee, you’ll get it in one session), you can join our league. The club will help by placing you on a team with more experienced players or can help you organize your own team. Check out the membership page for information on fees.
To reserve, please email Dave Markowski or Jerome Larson , voice 707-374-3920.
